Goldman Sachs Entrepreneurship Certificate Program


The Goldman Sachs Entrepreneurship Certificate Program is designed for women across Rwanda who are interested in either starting a business or expanding their start-up. The program will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to launch or expand a successful enterprise in Rwanda.

Session 5: HR & Organizational Management

“Human assets” often provide the competitive advantage which allow organizations to flourish and grow. At some point during the life cycle of their company, entrepreneurs will likely hire and manage their own employees. Because people are so critical to the success and viability of many entrepreneurial enterprises, managing human resources becomes one of a business owners most important responsibilities. Yet it can be one of the most challenging as well. During this three day session, participants will learn to promote and sustain positive employee behaviors and will explore contemporary practices to effectively manage human resources.

This session shall cover among other things, the Human Resources issues as they relate to small enterprises.

Managing People on Board (Julie Dziekan)
Understanding how individual differences influence employee behaviour; Empowering employees and delegating duties

Creating a Positive Work Environment (Julie Dziekan)
Emotional intelligence; Understanding functional and dysfunctional conflict; Managing conflict effectively; Ethics and the fair treatment of employees

Strategic Human Resource Management (Julie Dziekan)
The four pillars of Strategic HRM: Employee recruitment and selection; Performance management; Compensation systems; Training and development

Motivating Employees (Charles Kayitana)
Understanding of Motivatation theories, Leadership theories: Functions of leadership and skills, types of leadership, leadership styles

Employee Work Teams and Leadership (Charles Kayitana)
Work teams of Type team, team synergy, groups, self managed teams, project teams, parallel teams, virtual teams

Basics of Organizational Management (Charles Kayitana)
Understanding of the basics of organisational theories:  Definitions of the organisation, organizational structure, functional structure, matrix structure
