Pharmaceuticals and the Health Sector

This chapter consolidates existing knowledge around the role, structure, and improvement levers of pharmaceutical systems, and reviews issues facing the pharmaceutical component of health sectors in developing countries. It presents an overview of the approaches used to manage the development, production, distribution, and licensing of pharmaceutical products in developing country markets. It highlights the role of pharmaceuticals in the health sector, then the key issues affecting pharmaceutical product development. It considers the manufacturing and production of pharmaceuticals, followed by regulatory aspects, and the various options for financing the provision of pharmaceuticals. It then turns to issues of distribution and access to pharmaceuticals, including trade and Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) aspects, before concluding.
