Overview

What is a Davidson Field Scholar?

Davidson Field Scholars is a select group of U-M graduate students who actively and intentionally engage with WDI in addressing the business challenges faced by partner companies and organizations operating in low- and middle-income countries. They work with WDI’s partners in the field and contribute to at least two WDI projects.

What can a student expect to receive as a Davidson Field Scholar?

  • All scholars will have a profile on the WDI website that recognizes their leadership and commitment to WDI’s mission of “equipping economic decision makers in emerging markets with the tools of commercial success.”
  • Some of their work may be included in articles and blogs on NextBillion.net.
  • They will be invited to any Davidson Field Scholar events or speaking engagements.
  • They will be receive priority consideration for capacity constrained WDI programs or events.

Are scholars evaluated during the WDI-sponsored programs?

The scholars are evaluated as a part of the qualifying WDI sponsored program in which they participate. Scholars will also be evaluated to ensure their work meets WDI standards and their conduct is in good standing.

Is this a yearly program or would I have to reapply each year?

Once a student is designated as a scholar, they will remain a scholar while at U-M and as an alumnus as long as they satisfactorily complete the requirements and remain in good standing.

Financial

Is there any financial commitments for the scholar?

No. The program does not require a financial commitment from the scholar.

Is this a scholarship?

No. Becoming a Davidson Field Scholar does not include a financial aid award.  

How To Apply

Who is eligible to apply?

  • The Davidson Field Scholar Program is open to all graduate students at the University of Michigan.
  • Eligible applicants must complete two of the following WDI-sponsored student programs. Students may apply once the first program is completed. As a part of the application process, students would then declare their intention to participate in an additional WDI sponsored student program as listed below:
    • BA685 course “Healthcare Delivery in Emerging Markets”
    • BA656 course “Living Business Leadership Experience” as a part of the Michigan Academy for Developing Entrepreneurs (MADE) program
    • WDI approved independent study project
    • WDI sponsored summer internship
    • WDI sponsored project through the
    • WDI sponsored International Investment Fund

What is the application process?

  1. Eligible students can apply at any time by submitting an application.
  2. WDI will then review the material and notify the student if he/she will be designated as a Davidson Field Scholar.

When are applications due?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed upon submission.

Does WDI provide independent study projects?

WDI may have independent study projects available that they will offer to Davidson Field Scholars.
