Identifying Factors that Influence Patient Empowerment and Review of Internal Communications

Funded by the Rwandan government and user fees, the Ruli District Hospital is a 150-bed facility with eight physicians on staff. It is located about 50 miles from Kigali. The Ihangane Project empowers Rwandan communities to develop integrated approaches to the complex challenges of HIV by supporting community-driven projects that increase access to healthcare, improve healthcare quality and foster long term success through economic development. Student intern Anna Chan reviewed communication within the health system, as well as factors that influenced patient empowerment.

Philips Healthcare is a diversified health and well-being company focused on improving people’s lives through timely innovations. Philips Ultrasound is a business unit of the Philips Healthcare sector and was marketing a low-cost ultrasound for the Base of the Pyramid market. Student intern Stephen Ahn worked with Philips to introduce an affordable ultrasound machine to the Indian market. Specifically, Ahn identified customer segmentation opportunities.

Ross and Medical School dual degree student intern Daniel Bickley worked with the hospital and a network of health centers to analyze the complex chain of information flowing between clinicians and administrators and between the different levels of the Rwandan health care system. He provided recommendations and implemented improvements congruent with and sustainable within the existing health care system. Ihangane Project founder Wendy Leonard said “Dan worked diligently to accomplish his goal. Just as importantly, he engaged all stakeholders in this process and empowered his Rwandan translator to actively participate in his research and implemention.”

Aravind is the largest, most productive eye care facility in the world, encompassing several hospitals, a center for ophthalmic products, and an international research foundation. The student MAP team developed a communications strategy and marketing materials to showcase Aravind’s opportunities for ongoing learning and professional development.

For more than a decade, VeAhavta has sponsored the Grace Care Center (GCC) in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Grace is a home for about seventy needy children and destitute seniors, and offers day care services and vocational training. Grace aims to help overcome poverty one child at a time by providing the sense of home and family that had been lost to war and disaster. The student MAP team developed a business plan for an eatery and guest rooms at the Grace Care Center which is situated on seven acres of beach front property. The new facilities will provide employment opportunities for the young women of the orphanage.

Aravind is the largest, most productive eye care facility in the world, encompassing several hospitals, a center for ophthalmic products, and an international research foundation. The student MAP team reviewed Aravind’s processes and organization and looked for new opportunities in the market. The team also analyzed how to integrate some new hospitals in one of India’s states. In 2009, WDI and Aravind worked together on another MAP project that produced a detailed recruitment plan and roadmap for building training institutions.

King Faisal Hospital, located in Kigali, Rwanda, is one the preferred multidisciplinary specialist hospitals in the region. The student MAP team evaluated the ability to pay for health services, of patients from Rwanda and four neighboring countries. The team then combined this information with data from a separate, but ongoing, cost accounting project to identify strategic decisions that could move the hospital toward self-sustainability.

Aravind Eye Care System (AECS) provides eye care to a large segment of the population by adopting a unique cross subsidizing service model. In 2010, AECS had been in operation for 33 years with 3000 employees handling a patient volume of 2.8 million a year. AECS realized the importance of replicating their service model to address other forms of social issues, and decided to focus on the aging population of India to see whether the high volume, high quality affordable service model could be replicated. The student MAP team delivered a business plan for the development of a comprehensive-care facility for senior citizens. This included a market analysis, operations analysis, and financial projections to ensure the new organization would be financially sustainable.

Virika Hospital is a private, not-for-profit hospital owned by the Catholic Diocese of Fort-Portal, and is located in Western Uganda. The student MAP team developed mechanisms to maintain and analyze information that helped the operations of the facility.
