Harnessing technology to transform health systems

The challenge

In low- and middle-income countries, access to quality health care remains limited by resource constraints, inequities, and fragile systems. Rising disease burden and chronic healthcare worker shortages at all levels compound the problem—leaving many communities without sufficient providers to deliver essential services. Patients face high out-of-pocket costs, fragmented supply chains, and high vulnerability to systemic shocks that slow innovation and delivery—and are in urgent need for more resilient, equitable health systems.

Nearly 4.5 billion people—almost half the world’s population—lacks access to quality care.

The opportunity

Health tech is reshaping the future of care. From digital health platforms and AI-enabled diagnostics to telehealth, online pharmacies, and tech-enabled services, new solutions are advancing rapidly. The global telehealth market alone is projected to grow 11.5% annually to $180.9 billion by 2030. Startups across Africa and Asia are pioneering bold ideas, backed by rising investment and shifting consumer demand. The potential is transformative: delivering more accessible, affordable, and higher-quality health care. But this emerging sector still needs support—better financing, commercialization pathways, and stronger ecosystems to scale equitably and sustainably.
