Mariana Lopes, a dual-degree MBA/MS student at the University of Michigan, has immersed herself in all three of WDI’s student engagement programs — the International Investment Fund, the Frontier Finance Lab, and the Multidisciplinary Action Projects course. In this Q&A, she reflects on how these experiences have shaped her path in impact investing and sustainable development finance, and why she sees WDI as unlike anything else in higher education.

WDI and Acumen, a non-profit impact investment fund, have teamed up for “Founders in Focus,” a research initiative built around a simple idea: Entrepreneurs should have a real voice in shaping the impact investing ecosystem.

WDI Publishing has received a record 57 submissions from authors in 24 countries for its Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets 2026 Global Case Writing Competition — more than double the response of previous competitions. Winners will be announced in September.
